Genetic Engineering gains new features at NAB
Quantel further increases efficiencies for its revolutionary teamworking infrastructure
NAB, Las Vegas, NV, 13th April 2008: At NAB 2008, Quantel is introducing many new capabilities for its Genetic Engineering teamworking infrastructure.
Most are the result of suggestions from users that will make the system even more productive. The new features are:
TIFF virtualization – Genetic Engineering’s Sam data server can now virtualize media in the GenePool into TIFF files as well as DPX. TIFF files are widely used in workflows producing files for DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) distribution.
3D LUT burn-in – this is a great new extension of Sam’s virtualization technology. 3D LUT burn-in allows files to be produced with a wide range of looks but without rendering multiple copies or using up extra workspace on the GenePool.
Remote i/o – any connected system in a Genetic Engineering set-up can now instruct another to perform file i/o on its behalf. This can be a tremendous time saver, leaving creative suites free to continue with billable work. For example, a Pablo can delegate Sam to handle tasks such as file conform, QuickTime export and archiving to a SAN.
Archive – Sam’s new Archive folder allows IT-friendly scriptable archiving to be carried out as a continual background process while creative work continues uninterrupted.
Distribute workflow – enables operators of connected Quantel systems to put clips at any resolution into a Distribute folder on Sam ready for access by other software. Sam creates the new media on the fly only as it is requested, so creating no new media on the GenePool. In this way, Distribute speeds workflow and puts the Quantel creative operator firmly in control.
New 2K Genetic Engineering model – joins the HD and 4K systems in the range, designed for facilities that don’t require full 4K working.
“These new developments have come about as the result of feedback from existing users,” said Quantel Director of Marketing, Steve Owen. “For example, the TIFF virtualization feature came out of the LA post community where DCI is an issue, while Distribute was requested by a Japanese customer keen that its creative rather than IT staff should be in control of its workflow. It’s all about making the systems even more productive, and Genetic Engineering users are already reporting 300% - yes 300%! – increases in productivity. The new features are icing on the cake.”
